Kapaun and Hanson Earn National Hospice and Palliative Nurse Certification

Amy Kapaun, RN, CHPN, and Karen Hanson, RN, CHPN, successfully completed the Hospice and Palliative Nurse Certification through the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN).

Kapaun works as a call center supervisor at Hospice of the Red River Valley. She has been employed with the agency for 10 years. Kapaun earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Concordia College, both located in Moorhead, Minn.

Hanson has worked as a registered nurse (RN) for Hospice of the Red River Valley for more than two years. She earned an associate degree at Fergus Falls Community College in Fergus Falls, Minn.

The purpose of certification is to promote delivery of comprehensive palliative nursing care through the certification of qualified hospice and palliative professionals. Certification in hospice and palliative care is highly valued and provides formal recognition of hospice and palliative nursing or administration knowledge.

Community Soup and Sandwich Feed to be Held in Valley City on April 2

The Valley City State University Pre-Professional Club will host a Community Soup and Sandwich Feed on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 4:30-7 p.m. at the VFW located at 138 E. Main St. in Valley City.

The Community Soup and Sandwich Feed is open to the public. Tickets cost $7 per person; children under five eat for free. Tickets may be purchased in advance by contacting Hilde van Gijssel at 701-845-7337 or hilde.vangijssel@vcsu.edu. Tickets purchased in advance will be held at a will-call table. Tickets may also be purchased at the event.

Proceeds from the Feed will be used to advance the club, and a portion will be donated to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

About the Pre-Professional Club
The Pre-Professional Club at Valley City State University is for students interested in careers in the medical field, graduate school and law. The club helps students with the application process, provides volunteer opportunities, job shadowing and job observations hours, study sessions and mock admission tests and anything else related to the admission process of professional programs.

Allensworth Joins HRRV

Kelly AllensworthKelly Allensworth joins Hospice of the Red River Valley as a marketing and communications specialist. In her role, Allensworth will implement public relations and marketing strategies to increase public understanding and support of hospice care and Hospice of the Red River Valley’s mission to provide compassionate end-of-life care and support. Allensworth previously worked as a proposal coordinator for Ulteig in Fargo, N.D. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Iverson Joins HRRV as Hospice Account Executive

In her role, Iverson will build and maintain relationships with health care professionals, organizations and facilities to promote and provide valuable information about Hospice of the Red River Valley as the preferred hospice care provider. Iverson was previously employed by DMS Health Technologies in Fargo, N.D., as an account manager. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Mary.

Grief Workshops Offered in Fargo this Spring

Hospice of the Red River Valley offers the following grief and loss programs this spring. Registration is required and space is limited.

Journeying Through Grief will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursdays, April 3, 10, 17 and 24. This is a four-session workshop for recently bereaved adults to help them understand their grief, explore methods of self-care and to embrace memories. The registration deadline is March 28, and the registration fee is $20.

Youth Journeys will be held Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This program is for young people, ages 6-18, who have lost a loved one through death. A portion of the day will include parent/guardian participation. Registration is required by April 5.

Sheeley works as a registered nurse for Hospice of the Red River Valley. She earned an associate in science at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.

Certification in hospice and palliative care is highly valued and provides formal recognition of hospice and palliative nursing or administration knowledge.

Naytahwaush Nightriders Ride for Hospice of the Red River Valley Raises $7,112

Naytahwaush NightridersThe Naytahwaush Nightriders Sno-Club announced this year’s Ride for Hospice raised $7,112 for Hospice of the Red River Valley. In 10 years of the ride, the Nightriders have raised $68,684 to help provide hospice care to patients and families in Naytahwaush and surrounding areas.

This year’s Ride was held in February in conjunction with the MnUSA Winter Snowmobile Rendezvous that attracted 300-plus riders from Minnesota, North Dakota and Canada. The Nightriders were co-hosts of the annual Rendezvous’ featuring more than a dozen trail rides, an awards banquet and a special luncheon for dignitaries with a freewill offering for Hospice.

Tom and Ruth McArthur, Dan and Becky Rantanen, Carrot and Judy Paul and Keith and Judy Francis from the Nightriders presented a check to Joy Crouch, Hospice of the Red River Valley development officer, at their annual Snodeo held March 1-2.
