September Lunch and Learn Announced: Digging Deep – Coping Strategies for Children with Serious Illnesses

Hospice of the Red River Valley invites health care professionals to its September Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, from noon-1 p.m.

Topic, Presenter & Date
The next Lunch and Learn will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, from noon-1 p.m.

Wendy Iwerks, child life specialist with Sanford Health, will present on the topic of Coping Strategies for Children with Serious Illnesses. In this session, participants will learn how children at each developmental stage react to illness and hospitalization and how this affects the child’s family system. Attendees will also gain a general understanding of the strategies used by child life specialists to help children cope with illnesses.

Continuing Education
Hospice of the Red River Valley is an approved provider of continuing education for social workers in North Dakota. This program will be awarded 1 contact hour.

For your convenience, Lunch and Learns will be held in five Hospice of the Red River Valley Office locations:

  • Grand Forks* – 2860 10th Avenue N., Ste. 400, Grand Forks, N.D.
  • Lisbon* – 415 Main Street, Lisbon, N.D.
  • Valley City* – 1240 W. Main Street, Valley City, N.D.

*The Detroit Lakes, Grand Forks, Lisbon and Valley City office locations will be connected via videoconference to the Fargo office, where the live presentation will take place.

Registration
This event is free and open to all health care professionals, but pre-registration is required because space is limited. Participants may bring their own lunches; coffee and water will be provided. RSVP to Wendy Tabor-Buth: wtabor@hrrv.org or (701) 356-1532 one week prior to the Lunch and Learn, and indicate which location you will be attending.

Lunch and Learns in 2016 will be held every other month starting in January on the third Tuesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. Specific topics and descriptions will be shared closer to each date.

Caribou Coffee Employees at Thief River Falls Hugo’s Donate to Hospice of the Red River Valley

Employees of Caribou Coffee at the Thief River Falls Hugo’s store recently donated their tip money to Hospice of the Red River Valley. Employees earned $582.62 that was graciously given to Hospice in support of compassionate end-of-life care.

Contributing employees include Amber Juhl (manager), Bailey Kisch, Madison Rud, Avery Azure, Misica Fox, Danielle Meyer, Faith Myers and Sam Streets.

Hospice of the Red River Valley Welcomes Community Relations Specialist

Sue SorensenSue Sorensen recently joined Hospice of the Red River Valley as a community relations specialist. In this role, Sorensen fosters relationships and engages with health care professionals, facilities and community organizations to educate them on the services and benefits provided by Hospice of the Red River Valley. She is based in Detroit Lakes and serves a multi-county region in west central Minnesota. Sorensen has worked in the healthcare field in the Detroit Lakes area for 28 years and is a graduate of Mankato State University.

Fargo Quilting Group Donates 35 Quilts to Hospice Patients

Trollwould Quilters_photo collage_0816The Trollwood Quilting Group of Fargo recently donated 35 homemade quilts to Hospice of the Red River Valley. The quilts will be given to hospice patients by our staff members. The group said we should distribute them quickly because they are already working on another batch!

The quilting group accepts donations of sheets, sewing material, thread and mattress pads used for batting to continue making and donating quilts. If you would like to make a supply donation, please contact the volunteer department at Hospice of the Red River Valley at (800) 237-4629.
