Annual Report 2008
Dear Friend,
"Hospice understood her need to die with dignity in her own home embraced by her family. It was a comfort to know she was in capable, caring hands until the end."
This reflection, shared with us by a patient’s loved one, expresses what most Americans want in end-of-life care. Studies now validate what we have heard and learned for years:
- American’s prefer to die at home, surrounded by loved ones, without devastating financial consequences for their families.
- Hospice patients have a better quality of life and live longer than their terminally ill counterparts who do not receive hospice care.
- Remarkably, hospice care fulfills the needs most people express while being significantly less costly than traditional cares. A Duke University study finds that for every $1 spent on hospice care, Medicare saves $1.62.
My conclusion? The compassionate and cost effective end-of-life care we offer is part of the solution to the health care challenges we face.
Despite the uncertain economic climate and the daily realities of serving such a large geographic area, we remain committed to providing end-of-life care in the 28 counties we serve. We always seek ways to reduce operating costs without negatively impacting patient care. This year’s streamlined annual report offers one example of how we are reducing costs and illustrates the financial challenges we face. Your gifts are part of the solution and we are grateful for your steadfast support. Together, we are ensuring the continued availability of hospice care in our region.
