A Soft Touch
"I am energized, happy and satisfied that I have been able to offer comfort."
- Dixie Evans
Soothing music plays in the background of Dixie Evans massage studio. Her greeting is soft spoken and her handshake is gentle. The overstuffed suede chair beckons visitors to sit down and relax adding to the serene setting of an otherwise ordinary office building. Dixie exudes calm - it’s a gift that she shares with the patients she serves as a Hospice volunteer.
During a massage therapy session, Dixie works quietly massaging, hands, neck, shoulders and arms until she can visibly see and feel her patient relax. "Their breathing becomes slower and more even. You can sense the relaxation they are feeling. Some even fall asleep." Yet, when asked how she feels after the therapy session Dixie perks up, "I feel great. I am energized, happy and satisfied that I have been able to offer comfort."
In addition to massage therapy Dixie also offers friendship and conversation. She speaks fondly of a patient whom she has been visiting for two years. "At first, she came to me." The outings weren’t easy given her limited mobility but it was a special treat for her to get out and experience the relaxing setting of Dixie’s studio. As expected, the patient’s illness has progressed but their friendship has bloomed. Dixie now goes to her in her home. "We visit and I work on her hands and arms." Dixie pauses for a moment, smiles and then continues, "She has a great sense of humor - she’s very fascinating." Clearly, this friendship has touched her too.
Dixie’s massage therapy can lessen anxiety and ease pain. Patients and their families appreciate the gift of comfort she provides. So what’s in it for Dixie, - "The most satisfying volunteer work I’ve ever done."
