History of Hospice of the Red River Valley

Nearly 30 years of care and support.

1978 First meeting of the board of directors of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
1981 First patient served.
1983 Hospice becomes the first Hospice west of the Mississippi to be Medicare-certified.
1984 Services expand to all of Cass and Clay Counties.
1985 Hospice expands care to Trail County; office established in Mayville, ND.
1992 Fargo headquarters move into donated building in north Fargo.
1993 Hospice and Lakes Area Hospice (Detroit Lakes) merge; service area expanded to include Becker, Norman, Mahnomen and Ottertail Counties.
1995 Hospice merges with Northland Community Hospice (Thief River Falls); service area now includes Marshall, Pennington and Red Lake Counties.
1996 Detroit Lakes office moves into renovated space; staff quadrupled since merger. Hospice opens office in Lisbon, ND; service area now includes Ransom, Sargent, LaMoure and Dickey Counties.
1998 Hospice opens office in Valley City, ND; Barnes County added to service area.
1999 Thief River Falls office sold to First Care out of Fosston, MN.
2000 Campaign started to create an endowment fund for the future of the organization.
2002 First million dollars of endowment fund raised. Average daily census exceeds 100 patients. Physician hired. Website launched.
2003 Fargo office moves into new space in south Fargo. Heirlooms, a high-end resale store which will provide support for Hospice, opens.
2004 Average daily census increases 61%. Partnership in palliative care begins with major healthcare facilities.
2005 Hospice opens an office in Grand Forks, ND, now extending its services to 29 counties in North Dakota and Minnesota. Census for the year exceeds 1,000 patients. Legacy Society, the planned giving arm of the organization, is formed.
2006 Hospice collaborates with RiverView Healthcare Association in Crookston, MN to assume care of the patients in their Hospice program.
2007 Hospice purchases Fargo office building and begins renovation of additional space. Census reaches an average of 300 patients a day. Legacy Society tops 134 members. Full-time pharmacist hired.
2009 Expanded services to include individuals living in Thief River Falls and surrounding communities.
