Safe Disposal of Medications

There are times when a medication is no longer needed. To safely dispose of medications, follow these simple steps:

  1. Remove the medications from their original containers.
  2. Mix the medications with an undesirable substance such as used coffee grounds, liquid detergent or wet kitty litter. This makes the drugs less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through the trash seeking drugs.
  3. Place the mixture in a sealable bag and throw in your trash bin. Empty your trash bin promptly to prevent the drug from leaking or breaking out of your garbage bag.

You may also contact your local law enforcement; they may have a safe disposal program for medications.
