Tell us about your volunteer role and why you choose to volunteer with Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Currently I am a volunteer for a patient, and I do one weekly visit with them. I am going to school for nursing, and I knew I would be dealing with patients on hospice or in end of life situations. I wanted to have some experience with end-of-life patients. I thought it would be a great opportunity to volunteer my time and expose myself to hospice/end-of-life at the same time!

What is your favorite part about volunteering with Hospice?
My favorite part about volunteering with Hospice is that I get to volunteer while doing fun, engaging, interactive things at the same time. Some things I enjoy doing with my hospice patient include BINGO and coloring.

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering with Hospice of the Red River Valley?
If someone were to tell my they were interested in volunteering for Hospice of the Red River Valley, I would tell them they should definitely go for it! I know it can be daunting to think about working with end-of-life patients, but it’s not anything like it seems. You don’t focus on the end-of-life, but rather what can we do with the time left. It is a rewarding experience where you know you are making a difference in someone’s life each and every time you volunteer. It can be as simple as sitting and talking about the past with your patient, cooking, playing games or even watching television. Your time matters, and you are making a difference!

If you were given $1,000,000 to spend however you’d like, what would you do?
I’d be one lucky girl! I would put a majority of it into savings for the future. I would treat myself/friends/family to a few nice things and donate to some of my favorite organizations: Hospice of the Red River Valley, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the March of Dimes.

At Hospice of the Red River Valley, we’re fortunate to have dedicated volunteers of all ages and backgrounds throughout our service area. The Volunteer Spotlight celebrates their contributions to the organization and the ways they enrich our patients’ lives.
