Masonic Lodge No. 157 in Perham, Minn., raised $3,820 for Hospice of the Red River Valley. In December, the lodge hosted a booth at the New York Mills Christmas Tree Festival and sold angels for a suggested donation of $5 per angel.
The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care and support to those in Perham and the surrounding communities.
“We’re so grateful to Masonic Lodge No. 157 and the residents of Perham and surrounding communities for their generous support of our organization,” said Erin Hagen, development officer with Hospice of the Red River Valley. “Funds raised from the event are essential in ensuring we can continue to provide essential end-of life care and grief support to patients and families.”

The Fifth Annual Eagles Tree Walk, held at the Eagles Club #2368 in Thief River Falls, Minn., on Dec. 7, raised $6,500 for Hospice of the Red River Valley. The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care and support to those in Thief River Falls and the surrounding communities.
The event featured beautifully decorated trees and a variety of activities, including a tree walk, holiday bake sale, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, a soup and breadstick feed and memorial ceremony.
“We were very happy to exceed last year’s amount,” said Laurie Harger, Tree Walk organizer. “I would like to recognize Walmart for the Hospice memorial tree donation and the decorations throughout the venue. We can’t thank them, and all of the Tree Walk supporters, enough.”
Approximately 20 organizations participated in the tree-decorating event. Attendees could vote for their favorite tree placing donations in a container at each tree. The top fundraiser tree was the In Memory/Minnesota Tree. All trees were then offered to bidders via silent auction, and the Digi-Key Electronics tree earned the highest bid.
“Everyone at Hospice of the Red River Valley is so grateful to the community of Thief River Falls and the surrounding areas for their generous support of our organization,” said Erin Hagen, development officer at Hospice of the Red River Valley. “We’re honored to be part of this wonderful event that brings the community together.”
The Tree Walk has raised more than $21,500 for Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Great Plains Harmony, an award-winning men’s chorus based in Fargo, N.D., donated a portion of the proceeds from the group’s annual fall event to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
The group performed Sept. 27-28 at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. The event, titled “KGPH Radio: Greatest Hits of Today and Yesterday,” featured songs from a variety of genres and decades.
Great Plains Harmony is a chorus of 50 men who perform music from barbershop to vocal jazz to gospel to choral arrangements. The group was founded in May 1950.
“We are honored by Great Plains Harmony’s gift and support,” said Curt Seter, development officer with Hospice of the Red River Valley. “Support from community members like Great Plains Harmony ensures Hospice of the Red River Valley’s compassionate end-of-life care will continue for our patients and families.”

Employees of Border State Bank in Thief River Falls recently raised $3,000 for Hospice of the Red River Valley.
The Thief River Falls branch of Border State Bank has 21 employees who raise money throughout the year through various activities. This is the ninth year Border State Bank has chosen Hospice of the Red River Valley as the recipient. The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care to those in Thief River Falls and surrounding communities.
Jessica Porter, mortgage loan assistant at Border State Bank, said they chose Hospice of the Red River Valley as the beneficiary because of the care and compassion the organization provides to families during such a difficult time.
“Hospice of the Red River Valley is such a wonderful organization,” Porter said. “We are thankful for all of the community support and donations that have helped us continue to support such a vital service in our community. We look forward to continuing our fundraising efforts in 2020 to provide future support.”
“We are so appreciative of Border State Bank’s gift and support,” said Hospice of the Red River Valley Development Officer Curt Seter. “Their continued commitment to supporting Hospice of the Red River Valley helps ensure we will have the resources necessary to serve our patients and families in Thief River Falls and the surrounding area.”
Border State Bank has contributed $23,100 to Hospice of the Red River Valley since 2009.

The Thundering Saints donated $10,000 to Hospice of the Red River Valley, generated from charitable gaming proceeds in Valley City, N.D. The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care to those in Valley City and the surrounding communities.
“We’re honored by the support of The Thundering Saints and the Valley City community,” said Curt Seter, development officer with Hospice of the Red River Valley. “The funds raised are an essential component in ensuring Hospice of the Red River Valley will have the resources necessary to serve our patients and families in the Valley City area.”
The Thundering Saints Inc. is a non-profit organization that organizes the annual Debbie Gabel Memorial Cancer Ride and Raffle, which was held for the 11th time on July 27, 2019.
The event founder, Rocky Gabel, holds the event in memory of his wife, Debbie Gabel, who passed away under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley cared in 2009.
The Naytahwaush Nightriders Snowmobile Club will hold its 16th annual Hospice Ride on Feb. 1-2, 2020. The snowmobile ride is open to the public, and there is no cost to participate. Riders are asked to gather pledges to benefit Hospice of the Red River Valley. Register for the ride by contacting Tom McArthur at (218) 935-5855 or tomimac84@hotmail.com.
The roundtrip ride starts on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Pinehurst Resort in Naytahwaush and travels to Northern Lights Casino in Walker, Minn., for an overnight stay. Pizza will be provided by the club for dinner. Riders will leave for Naytahwaush on Sunday morning.
Over the past 15 years, participants have raised $117,082 for Hospice of the Red River Valley through the Hospice Ride, which covers a different area each year. The money raised helps provide medical, emotional, spiritual and grief support for Hospice patients and their families.
“We started the event as a way to remember Naytahwaush Nightriders members who have passed away while also supporting a local organization,” said Tom McArthur, the event’s organizer. “We hope riders from across the region will come out to participate in this fun and meaningful event again this year.”
The Naytahwaush Nightriders also will host its 50th annual Nightriders Snodeo event March 7-8 at Pinehurst Resort. The event has been voted the U.S. X-Country Snowmobile Racing organization’s race of the year the last three years.

Steve’s Sanitation donated $1,680 to Hospice of the Red River Valley. The funds were raised via proceeds from the sale of pink waste containers to customers in Becker County. Customers who made a one-time minimum $25 donation received a pink container.
“Thank you so much to Steve’s Sanitation and their customers,” said Erin Hagen, development officer with Hospice of the Red River Valley. “Their support allows us to continue offering compassionate end-of-life care to patients and families throughout Becker County.
Based in Perham, Steve’s Sanitation is a trash collection, transfer, disposal and recycling company that serves residents in Detroit Lakes and the surrounding communities in Becker County, Minn.

Meadow Lake Campground near Detroit Lakes, Minn., hosted a fundraising event with its summer residents in August. A basket raffle, ticket raffle and free-will lunch raised $5,706 for Hospice of the Red River Valley.
“We are so grateful for the generosity of Meadow Lake Campground and its residents,” said Erin Hagen, development officer with Hospice of the Red River Valley. “Their support helps us to provide compassionate end-of-life care to our patients and families in and around Detroit Lakes.”
The fifth annual Tree Walk for Hospice will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Eagles Club #2368, located at 305 Red Lake Boulevard in Thief River Falls, Minn.

Ornaments can be purchased at the event to decorate the Hospice Memorial Tree. Organizations also will have decorated trees. Visitors can vote for their favorite tree by placing money in the buckets at each tree. A plaque is awarded to the winning organization.
A silent auction will be held for all of the trees. Winners can have the tree shrink wrapped and get help with delivery, if needed.

Health care professionals are invited to Hospice of the Red River Valley’s upcoming Lunch and Learn as we continue to explore topics related to end-of-life care. Lunch and Learns are held every other month on the second Tuesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m.
The next session will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, from noon-1 p.m. Roxanne Smedsrud, RN, CHPN with Hospice of the Red River Valley, will present “Honoring Their Choices.” This collaborative session will help attendees understand:
Identify what patients want at end of life
Learn how to have the conversation about advance directives
Understand the difference between an advance directive, living will, health care agent and durable power of attorney.
